Worldart Gallery Exhibition
Cape Town-based photographer and abstract artist Rooiwolf will showcase his latest works as part of his first solo exhibition at premier gallery Worldart, located at 54 Church Street in the CBD. The show, which is titled Leg’kaarte (puzzles), runs from Thursday, 2 April to Friday, 1 May 2015.
A departure from his favoured medium of film, this camera-less project features sculptures made from plastics that have been exposed directly onto vintage photographic paper- or photograms to be more precise. Rooiwolf, whose real name is Juan Voges, used cyanotype - a photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print - to create three prints of each image in three different colour tones. The exhibition, which is titled Leg' Kaarte and references the Afrikaans word for 'puzzles', expresses Rooiwolf's fascination with memory, subjectivity and the chemical elements that influence and manage these processes. “I am inspired by A-symmetrical forms and spaces and by surrealism. Most of my work starts with a rather primitive and playful approach. I am also intrigued by analogue photography and darkroom techniques and enjoy exploring different mediums in alchemy,” says the artist.
In 2004, Rooiwolf bought his first camera and started working as an assistant for commercial/fashion photographers. He also did portraiture and photographic documentation.
Worldart is a commercial gallery that opened its doors in 2004. The gallery focuses on urban contemporary art, with a specific leaning towards street art forms and inspired works and, occasionally, pop art.
